Also in companies some systems run with Windows 10.

However, not everything works smoothly under Windows 10. Function updates (feature updates) or cumulative updates fail. Windows 10 features cause problems or the operating system doesn't want to start at all. The reason is probably a .NET Framework application for changing the file date, which I wrote myself many years ago, but which is not known in the Smartscreen filter.

Here is some background information on this book project for readers and those who may still be.

Who needs a book today?

I get to hear again and again ‘Who needs a book today, can find everything on the internet’. This may be true, but in practice it is not so easy. If you look for a bug and fix it, you will find a lot of posted crap in forums. It is therefore important to separate the chaff from the wheat – not everyone is able to do so.

Also background information on functions or why and under what boundary conditions a fix for repair works, are often misrepresented in forums. In my blog, I often dedicate myself to solutions. But some readers are missing the red thread.

Whether you need a book, every potential reader has to answer himself. It's an offer (and also an experiment) from my side, as a supplement to the blog.

Is a book obsolete in three months?

Second argument, which I hear again and again: ‘The functional updates in Windows 10 change everything for a long time, a book is then overtaken after 3 to 6 months’. There's something true about this argument if you were to relate the whole thing to Windows 10's user interface and app features. In my opinion, Microsoft will shoot itself in the foot in the medium term.

But the work discussed here does not describe app functions (click here or there) or simple functions such as the settings app, but goes into contexts and background information. In addition, for years I have been accustomed to writing books in such a way that they survive as many software updates as possible (as long as readers are not slavishly attached to screenshots or menu titles – just as an example: when from computers suddenly This PC and in the book a screenshot shows the icon, you should also be able to cope with an old version of a book, and call the Explorer).

Historically (see following sections) the book manuscript was written over two years. Windows 10 Creators Update was available for specialist editing – and there were already quite stable versions of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update for flag correction. Findings: Only marginal corrections had to be made so that the manuscript parts started a year or two ago fit the current Windows 10 version. Say: So my concept seems to be working. The book is very strong with my blog is interwoven and contains many references to blog posts, I can keep topics about this track up to date and write supplements if necessary.

A book by a Windows 10 critic?

There is one other topic that is occasionally mentioned to me by Windows 10 fans. I don't take a leaf in the blog if I think things or developments in Windows 10 are crap (even if I think a lot of Windows 10 is good and useful). Windows 10 and its development is characterized by marketing and less by technology.

So what I've been denied is the 'authorisation' to write a book on Windows 10. Apart from the fact that we have outgrown kindergarten, I don't have to sell anyone a Windows 10. And Microsoft has honored me for several years as an MVP and now as an Insider MVP for my work as a writer, blogger and community moderator. So the company is above the ‘small’, which I am told.

Book buyers have a Windows 10, which is the initial situation I used when writing the manuscript. So the book does not have to convince potential Windows 10 buyers, so this group of interested parties is eliminated. If you drive on the track ‘I can do everything, know everything and have never had any problems with this Windows 10’, well, you are also the wrong addressee for this title.

But there are probably people who are concerned about having to get a striking Windows 10 back on track. That's where the book comes in. Knowledge of diagnostics, background information, and how to get ahead, understand Windows 10, or use it better.

Why would it take two years for a book like this?

In recent months, I have been repeatedly asked by potential readers to send me e-mails ‘When is the book coming? This has been postponed so many times – in two years’ time all the tricks should have been written together three times?’ – the title had already been announced in previous years. Does the author not come into ‘the hooves’?

The reason is clearly mine. In March 2015, I suffered a serious sports accident with dislocation of the cervical spine including damage to the spinal cord and incomplete cross-sectional symptoms. This led to 4 weeks of hospitalisation with three severe surgeries and 5 weeks of rehabilitation – I could no longer move my arms. Fortunately, I didn't end up paralyzed from the neck down in a wheelchair.

In my head I had the concept for the book and also material on the hard disk. Mentally, I could have started – and tried – the manuscript in the summer of 2015, just in time for the release of Windows 10. But if you barely get your fingers on the keyboard and have to break off after 10 minutes because of animal pain, it won't work with writing.

More than two years later, my personal situation has improved – I can walk, move my arms and also sit and write on the computer by the hour. So, starting in October 2016, I started finishing the manuscript and tuning it to Windows 10 Creators Update. The result was also finished shortly after the rollout of version 1703 as a manuscript at the beginning of May 2017. But the production of a book is subject to certain procedures (specialist proofreading, proofreading, set, flag correction and printing). That took a while.

As already written above: The realization was that even early manuscript parts still hold in 2017. It's not all of a sudden all wrong, just because Windows 10 now carries version 1703 or soon version 1709. On the contrary, the information has held from Windows 10 version 1511 (RTM version from July 2015) to today. Gives me hope that the work will still make sense in a year.

But as I said, the title is an offer and for me an experiment on whether the need for such a book still exists. That was a lot of information and talking out of the box. You have to jump as a reader.

The book ‘Windows 10 Power-Tipps – Die Allzweckwaffe für Windows’ was published by Markt+Technik-Verlag.
