Windows 10 RTM support ends May 9, 2017

[German]Microsoft will kill support for Windows 10 RTM after May 9, 2017, except for Windows 10 V1507 LTSB. Here are a few details.

Life time support for Windows has been 10 years for decades. But now it seems, that Microsoft is lowering this period. In August 2015 I've published a German blog post about End of life dates for Windows 10. At this time Microsoft wrote:

  • Mainstream-Support: 10/13/2020
  • Extended Support:  10/14/2025

That was what we've already known in the past. At this site Microsoft write, Windows 10 RTM will have it's last revision 04/11/2017 (April patch day). Now Microsoft has published KB article 4018798. There they write:

With the availability of Windows 10, version 1607 to the VLSC on January 26th, the grace period for Windows 10, version 1507 will begin. End of servicing for Current Branch (CB) and Current Branch for Business (CBB) will occur on May 9, 2017. This applies to the following editions, released July 2015:

  • Windows 10 Home
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Windows 10 Education
  • Windows 10 Enterprise

That means that v1507 will no longer receive security updates after the May update. There is no impact to other editions, including the Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2015 LTSB.

Customers are encouraged to update to the latest CB and CBB to remain supported.

And we have seen, that Microsoft has stopped also support for Windows 7/8.1 update on newer Intel Kaby Lake and AMD Ryzen CPUs. It seem, that Microsoft is no more the company, we can use for projects requiring long term support of an operating system.
