Some Windows 10 users are receiving an update error 0x80240437 installing an update via Windows Update or using Windows Store to update an app. Here are a few hints how to solve this issue.
I stumbled upon this error the first time within this Microsoft Answers forum thread. A user wrote, that Windows 10 Version 1703 (Creators Update) terminates update installs with error code 0x80240437.
Searching the web leads to the recommendation, to check Windows for system file integrity (as I has shown within blog post Check and repair Windows system files and component store. But this won't work in Windows 10 Version 1703 (see my notes below).
What does error 0x80240437 stands for?
I mentioned some details within this Microsoft Answers forum thread. Error 0x80240437 stands for WU_E_PT_SECURITY_VERIFICATION_FAILURE (see also my blog post Windows: How to decode update 0x8024…. errors). There is a problem with authorization of update service. Maybe Windows component store is damaged, maybe something else is broken.
Windows 10 V1703: We can't run dism to repair component store
The best attempt will be, to use the instruction given within the blog post Check and repair Windows system files and component store. Unfortunately, Windows 10 V1703 has been shipped with damaged system files, so dism fails with an error 0x800F081F.
A possible workaround could be my blog post Windows 10 V1703: Fix for DISM error 0x800F081F to resolve the broken manifest issue. And after the image has been fixed, use dism to repair Windows component store.
Reset Windows Update store
If a check and repair of Windows component store doesn't help, try to reset Windows component store. Many users will us Microsofts Windows Update trouble shooter latestwu.diagcab (see Windows 10: New update troubleshooter app and site). If that didn't work, try the steps below:
1. Open an administrative command prompt window (enter cmd in search box and use context menu command Run as administrator).
2. Execute the commands listed below.
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
The rename folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old and also folder catroot2 to catroot2.old. Then restart Windows and try Windows Update again.
Take care of your Antivirus software
Error 0x80240437 can also be caused by wrong date, time or time zone. Also third party firewalls, antivirus products and VPN software has been identified as a root cause.
Within this US Microsoft Answers forum thread a user reported, that Kaspersky security products may cause this behavior and suggested how to solve the issue.
Reset Windows Store
If error 0x80240437 occurs during app install from Windows Store, try to reset store (cache). Press Windows+R and enter wsreset.exe into the Run dialog box. This clears the Windows Store cache. Also re-registering manifest files via PowerShell has been proposed, and I read, that network adapter problems has been identified as a root cause.
