Office Updates fixes VBA issue (May 6, and 8, 2020)

[German]Good news for Microsoft Office users who were affected by the VBA issue with the April 2020 security updates. Microsoft has released fixes for Office 2013 and for Office 2016 on May 6 and 8, 2020. Addendum: An update for Office 2010 has also been released.

What's the problem, that has been fixed?

A number of security updates for Windows, Office, etc. were released on April 14, 2020. Among others, the vulnerability CVE-2020-076 in Microsoft Office was closed (I had pointed this out in the article Patchday Patchday Microsoft Office Updates (April 14, 2020)).

The security updates that were intended to close the  CVE-2020-0760 vulnerability could cause references to type libraries in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to be blocked on affected systems. In this case, VBA macros can no longer be executed and report an error. I had pointed out this problem in the blog post April 2020 Patchday: Review and issues and also described a workaround via Group Policy.

Office Updates with fixes

The colleagues from deskmodder.de noticed that Microsoft released the following updates on 6 and 8 May 2020. These refer to the MSI installer versions, the subscription versions and click-to-run installations are not covered. For Microsoft Office 2010 there seems to be no update available yet.

Update KB3101353 for Office 2016

Update KB3101353 has been available for Office Standard 2016, Office Professional Plus 2016, Office Professional 2016, Office Home and Student 2016 and Office Home and Business 2016 since May 8, 2020. This update fixes the following issue that occurs after you install security update KB3128012::

Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros are not loaded if they contain references to components that are located in a file path or that have a file name that contains double-byte character set (DBCS) characters.

Compared to the original error description, an additional DBCS character problem in the file name was addressed. The update is available from the Microsoft Download Center and must be downloaded and installed manually. The download addresses can be found in the KB article.

Update KB2986208 for Office 2013

Update KB2986208 is available for Microsoft Office 2013 Service Pack 1 since May 6, 2020. This update fixes the same issue that is described in the previous paragraph that is not loaded after you install the KB3128012 Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros security update. This update is also available only from the Microsoft Download Center and must be manually downloaded and installed. The download addresses can be found in the KB article.

Addendum: Update KB3015640 for Office 2010

Update KB3015640 is available for Microsoft Office 20103 Service Pack 2 since May 7, 2020. This update fixes the same issue that is described in the first paragraph that does not load Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros after you install the April 14, 2020 security update. This update is also available only from the Microsoft Download Center and must be manually downloaded and installed. The download addresses can be found in the KB article.
