[German]Quick information for administrators who still maintain Windows 7 systems and need an ESU license for 2021. Renewal licenses are now available and are starting to ship.
Some Background
On Jan. 14, 2020, yes, Windows 7 SP1 reached its long-announced end of support – and there are no more security updates by default. However, corporate customers have the option to purchase an ESU license for Windows 7 SP1 to continue receiving security updates between January 2020 and January 2023 at the latest. Microsoft has announced Extended Security Updates (ESU) support for this purpose as a separate program for corporate customers (see Wow! Windows 7 get extended support until January 20). ESU licenses are available for the following operating systems:
- Windows 7 SP1
- Windows 7 Professional for Embedded Systems
- Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 SP2
- Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for Embedded Systems and Windows Server 2008 SP2 for Embedded Systems
The first year of ESU support expires in January 2021. Who wants to continue to have security updates for Windows 7 SP1 in 2021, needs the ESU package for the second year. I had pointed out this fact and the details in the blog post Windows 7 SP1: ESU Support for 2021 – Part 1 in December 2020 for the last time.
ESU licenses for 2021 now available
Until now, however, it was the case that only pre-orders were possible. The German vendor Software Express mentioned in the blog post Windows 7 SP1: ESU Support for 2021 – Part 1 informed me a few hours ago that the ordered ESU keys are now shipped – my ESU key is available on the respective portal. This vendor is also shipping to international customers. The colleagues from askwoody.com also has an article Win7 ESU License purchasing now open citing Harbor Computer Services as a source for US customers who are in need for an ESU license 2021.
