Windows 11: Microsoft fixes issues rendering colors correctly

Windows[German]Since the release of Windows 11, users have complained about problems with color management and that the use of ICC color profiles does not work. Now Microsoft has fixed the problem, which was officially confirmed in 2021, with the preview update KB500835 from January 25, 2022. Here is a brief overview of this issue.

The color rendering issue

Windows 11 could not use ICC color profiles correctly in previous builds, so colors in applications were displayed incorrectly. If you search the internet for terms like "Windows 11 color wrong" you will find quite a number of hits. On reddit.com, someone posted this in October 2021 with a number of examples.

On the Windows 11 status page, Microsoft had admitted to the problem as of December 24, 2021. According to Microsoft, after installing Windows 11, some image editing programs may not correctly reproduce colors on certain HDR displays. This is often observed with white colors, which can be displayed in bright yellow or other colors.

This problem occurs when certain Win32 color rendering APIs return unexpected information or errors under certain conditions. Not all color profile management programs are affected. I had reported about the problem in the blog post  Windows 11: Microsoft confirms issues with false colors displayed.

Update KB500835 fixes the color rendering

As of January 25, 2022, Microsoft has also released the preview update KB5008353 for Windows 11. In  In the change notifications, it says among other things (see also Windows 11 / Windows Server 2022 Preview Update (Jan. 25, 2022)):

Updates a known issue that might prevent some image editing programs from rendering colors correctly on certain high dynamic range (HDR) displays. This frequently affects white colors that might display in bright yellow or other colors.

So exactly the issue addressed above. On the Windows 11 status page, the entry Applications using Win32 APIs to render colors might not work as expected now says that the issue with the incorrect color rendering in Windows 11 (21H2) has been fixed by the above-mentioned update.
