Microsoft Office Update KB5002160 (March 1, 2022) breaks Access db connections

[German]As of March 1, 2022, Microsoft has released regular updates for the MSI installation versions of Microsoft Office 2013 and 2016. After installing these updates, users complain that accessing Access databases from applications no longer works. The applications hang or throw errors.

Office Update KB5002160

Microsoft Office 2016 update KB5002160 – released on March 1, 2022,  fixes an issue where a custom application can crash if you use more than one protocol to connect to Microsoft Access or other Office data (for example, Object Linking and Embedding, Database (OLEDB), Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), or Data Access Objects (DAO)). I had reported in the blog post Microsoft Office Updates (March 1, 2022) about the patch, which is only available for the MSI installation versions of Microsoft Office.

Issues with Access databases

Now German blog reader HB has reported within this comment (thanks for that) huge isssues with applications that are no longer being able to access Access databases. He wrote (translated):

In our case the Access Database Engine 2016 x64 dependent products do not run anymore, so far no other solution than uninstalling this KB, then everything runs again.

Very special what M$ there on the subject of Access lately simply relesed to the market… We hope for the fix of the fix!

The user is not alone, because he linked to this Q&A section of Microsoft, where other users report the same error.

After install update KB5002160 is problem with initialize DB engine 2016. My program is freezing.

  1. _DBEnginePtr dbEngine;
  2. DAO_CHECK_ERROR(dbEngine.CreateInstance(__uuidof(DBEngine)), AFX_DAO_ERROR_ENGINE_INITIALIZATION);

In this thread other affected people report, where the access to the Access database from applications hangs. Reinstalling the "Microsoft Access 2016 database engine" only works temporarily, as Windows notices the missing update and reinstalls it if necessary.

One user states as a workaround to install an older version of the Database Engine from the following links:
