Cloud services and servers hosted by Google and Oracle in the UK have gone offline due to cooling issues as the country experiences a record-breaking heat wave. That's according to The Register, and it's also according to status updates from Google.
Right now, Europe is suffering under an unprecedented heat wave. When my Internet went down at noon on July 19, 2022, I thought that a switch box from my phone company had failed due to heat exhaustion. But a quick diagnosis revealed that the lines and the DSL access was running smoothly, while the Internet provider's servers were not providing any answers. Google have had outages
Google's status reports indicate that as of July 19, 2022, there were outages in individual cloud regions (europe-west2-a for the europe-west2 region).
There was a cooling related failure in one of our buildings that hosts a portion of capacity for zone europe-west2-a for region europe-west2 that is now resolved. GCE, Persistent Disk and Autoscaling impacts have been addressed. Customers can launch VMs in all zones of europe-west2. A small number of HDD backed Persistent Disk volumes are still experiencing impact and will exhibit IO errors. The issue has been resolved for all affected users as of Tuesday, 2022-07-19 20:43 US/Pacific.
The disruption began at 10:13 a.m. on July 19 and ended at 8:45 p.m. Pacific time, according to Google. Servers had to be shut down in the data centers to prevent damage to the hardware. The Register writes here that temperatures of 40.3 degrees Celsius were reached in the east of England. This is a record high, and cooling could not be maintained in the data centers.
As selected machines were shut down to avoid long-term damage, some resources, services and virtual machines were unavailable. This also affected some websites, which were then gone.
Oracle also affected
But it wasn't just Google that was tangentially affected; several Oracle cloud infrastructure resources were also taken offline, according to The Register. That affected networks, storage and computing power provided by servers in the south of the United Kingdom. According to a Team Oracle status update, cooling systems were blamed, and technicians turned off the equipment.

We have confirmed data center cooling infrastructure has been restored and temperatures have returned to normal operating levels. All services and customer resources have been restored. Virtual Machine Instances which did not self-recover have been manually brought online by service engineers. However, a subset of Oracle Integration Cloud resources continue to experience impact. Engineers are actively working to mitigate those remaining service resources.
