Outlook 2019: Crash when clicking "Send to"; and Outlook 365 deletes rules

[German]I'd like to summarize two topics related to Outlook that readers pointed out to me yesterday. It seems that a bug has crept into Outlook 2019 that causes the program to crash when "Send from" is selected. And another reader reported that Outlook 365 was deleting self-defined rules in its environment.

Outlook 365 deletes rules

German blog reader Harald has contacted me by email and reported an unpleasant effect under Outlook 365. He writes that Microsoft 365 is used in the company. However, the administration is not managed by the area in which Harald is active, but is done by the parent company, he said. Harald has now told me that he has noticed that Outlook 365 gradually disappears the rules he created himself (such as message from XYZ -> delete, message with subject abc -> move to folder xyz, etc.) every 1-3 months.

He has not yet found out why and why this happens. However, the effect has been observed for 2-3 years, Harald says, and asks whether I have heard anything like this before or whether any of the readers are aware of anything similar. I myself have only found this old entry from 2015 about Outlook 2013, but it doesn't fit the context. Harald also wrote to me that they had previously used Office 2016 and there was no problem. The rules remained until they deleted them themselves. The clients are all running Windows 10 current build (physical devices as well as VM) devices or Macs, where the error also occurs. Can anyone make sense of this?

"Send from" causes Outlook to crash

German blog reader Leonhard has informed me in a second email about a new problem that seems to be occurring in Outlook 2019. In the tech community, there is an entry Outlook (Office 2019) crashes when Send of From clicked from November 21, 2023, where a user describes that he has been unable to send emails via Outlook since Sunday, September 19, 2023. The email can be composed and the recipient can be selected.

However, when the user tries to send the message, it hangs for a few seconds, closes and reopens (losing all traces of the message in question). Later, the user found out that this also happens when he clicks on the "From" button (to change the sender of the mail).

The user has tried various things to no avail, and the post has since received further user comments confirming this behavior. Some users reported that support was able to resolve the issue by updating or reinstalling Outlook 2019.

Addendum: Microsoft has confirmed this issue and will rollout a fix soon, see my blog post here.
