Outlook 2019/2021: Microsoft shares workaround for "Send from" crash

[German]Since a few days now (November 21, 2023), users of Outlook 2019 and 2021 have been complaining that they can no longer send emails via Outlook. Outlook 2019 crashes as soon as "Send from" is selected in the mail client or something is changed there. Microsoft has now published a workaround for this bug and plans to distribute a fix soon. Update: The fix should be available.

Send from" may causes Outlook to crash

I addressed the problem in the blog post Outlook 2019: Crash when clicking "Send to"; and Outlook 365 deletes rules a few days ago. The problem in Outlook: The email can be created and the recipient can be selected. However, when he tries to send the message and selects "Send from", the mail hangs for a few seconds but is not sent – Outlook 2019 probably crashes.

In the tech community, there is an entry Outlook (Office 2019) crashes when Send of From clicked from November 21, 2023, where the problem is outlined. Someone also addressed the problem on Microsoft Answers on November 20, 2023 in the post Outlook crashes when sending email ONLY from outlook.com email address. There are already three pages of reports there. Some users reported (directly to me or in forums) that they were able to fix the problem by updating or reinstalling Outlook 2019. Alternatively, going back to the previous Outlook version via the Click-2-Run installer (see here) is the solution.

Microsoft shares workaround, fix coming

As of November 28, 2023, Microsoft has published the support article Outlook Desktop crashes sending an email from Outlook.com accounts, where the connection with Outlook.com mailboxes is addressed (the colleagues here have noticed the new post). Microsoft confirms that Outlook crashes when users send an email from their Outlook.com account. This issue occurs for users of the Current Channel (Preview) with build 17029.20028.

Internally, Microsoft has already developed a fix that will be rolled out in the near future with build 17029.20052 (and higher) (not yet released) and will fix the crashing issue. The current solution suggested by Microsoft is to execute the following commands in an administrative command prompt:

cd %programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun
officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.16924.20124

to go back to the specified Outlook version. Update: The fix should be available since a few hours.
