[German]Users of Windows 11 22H2-23H2 who have installed the cumulative security update KB5033375 from December 2023 may run into problems with Wi-Fi access. There are now reports that WPA2 Enterprise Wireless is broken due to the update. Universities are now warning against installing the update and recommending that affected users uninstall it. Microsoft has not yet announced anything about this problem. Thanks to the blog reader for pointing this out.
Windows 11 Update KB5033375
Cumulative update KB5033375 was released on December 12, 2023 for Windows 11 version 22H2 – 23H2. According to Microsoft, it only contains fixes that are intended to eliminate security problems in Windows. In addition, the new features mentioned in the preview update from the previous month (see Windows 11 23H2/22H2: Preview Update KB5032288 (December 04, 2023)) are also integrated. I mentioned the update in the blog post Patchday: Windows 11/Server 2022 updates (December 12, 2023).
Wi-Fi issues with update KB5033375
German blog reader have informed me by email or in comments that the update is causing problems. Johannes K. wrote, for example, "Could you perhaps pass this message on to the community. The mandatory security update KB5033375 may lead to incompatibilities between Windows 11 and certain WLAN chips. Has anyone had any "experience" with this?" and provided me with some links.
In the Microsoft Answers forum, I immediately found some user reports from the end of last week reporting problems with the WLAN in connection with the KB5033375 update. In this forum post, someone describes the issue:
KB5033375 patch breaking WPA2 Enterpise Wireless
We have had a number ow windows 11 computer stop being able to connect to our wifi network after updating to kb5033375. If we rollback the update it starts work again.
The user writes that only uninstalling the update helped. Another user also describes connection issues with wifi access in MS Answers:
New windows update won't let me connect to eduroam
I updated my laptop today to 2023-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5033375) and now my laptop wont connect to eduroam. It worked perfectly fine before the update but now it is stuck checking network requirements. I've tried using troubleshooting which told me to reset my network settings and restart my computer. I did that and now when I do trouble shooting it says not connected to network and tells me to try and conned to a network when I'm already trying to connect to eduroam. I've tried updating my drivers they're all up to date, I've tried forgetting eduroam and then reinstalling the system requirements, and I've tried restarting the laptop.
Also my computer is able to connect to other networks, it is only eduroam that is having this problem but unfortunately eduroam is the only WiFi I can use as the only other available one is a WiFi I can connect to for 30 minutes to set up eduroam.
How would I fix this?
In the thread above, other users confirm these problems and Andrea Schremp writes that it only affects the 802.11x PEAP/MSCHAPv2 SSID and only Dell Precision 3560 devices. These have Qualcomm QCA61x4a wireless adapters. If the affected person connects a TPLINK USB network adapter, the WLAN connection works. The affected person has found several entries in the Event Viewer:
Wireless security failed. Reason: Dynamic key exchange did not succeed within configured time
Error: 0x0
Post Connect Security has FAILED with reason code: 0x48005
However, the error is not only limited to Dell Precision 3560 devices, a user with two Lenovo Slim Pro 9i has also reported being affected. This user describes the problem separately in this MS Answers forum thread.
Further reports
The user from this MS Answers forum thread states that he has found several universities that suggest uninstalling the update. Here are some hits warning against this update:
Windows Lastest has now also addressed the problem in this blog post. According to this article, the first users have already observed the problem in preview update KB5032288 (see Windows 11 23H2/22H2: Preview Update KB5032288 (December 04, 2023)). The above-mentioned Qualcomm QCA61x4a wireless adapter is also mentioned as being affected.
Handshaking with 802.11r
In this Microsoft Answers forum thread, someone from Belgium describes that the connection issues are related to 802.11r (Fast BSS Transition) Wi-Fi routes handshaking. After deactivating 802.11r, the WLAN connection works.
Uninstall and prevent re-installation
It's all over the reports: The only remedy is to uninstall the update in question, KB5033375. However, Windows 11 users have the problem that Microsoft has withdrawn update control from its users since Windows 10.
Administrators can prevent the update from being reinstalled on managed environments. In unmanaged environments, the KB5033375 update must be blocked using the Show or Hide Updates (wushowhide.diagcab). Any of you affected?
