Windows 10/Server 2019: Update KB5035849 fails with error 0xd0000034

Windows[German]On March 12, 2024 (Patchday), Microsoft released the security update KB5035849 for Windows Server 2019. A short time later, the first user reported various error crashes during installation. At the end of the process, it emerged that the update installation always fails with the error code 0xd0000034. There are other sources on the Internet with the same error pattern (something could be wrong with the update package). A quick question for the administrators: Do you also have this installation error?

Windows Update KB5035849

Cumulative Update KB5035849 is only available for Windows 10 2019 Enterprise LTSC and IoT Enterprise LTSC (the remaining variants will no longer be supported with security updates on May 11, 2021) and Windows Server 2019. The update will therefore only play a role in the enterprise environment (I had installed it on my LTSC system – it went through).

I mentioned the update in the blog post Patchday: Windows 10-Updates (March 12, 2024). In the support post, Microsoft writes that the update affects Active Directory domains that host Mobile Device Management (MDM) providers. Administrators can switch from "compatibility mode" to "enforcement mode" for strong certificate mappings in this environment.

First reader report about problems

As early as March 12, 2024, a reader reported at 7:12 p.m. (CET) within this comment that two systems with Windows Server 2019 Standard (x64, German) were already running into an installation error when installing the March 2024 update KB5035849. One system had failed with the error code 0x80240034, while the second Windows Server 2019 reported the installation error 0xd0000034.

Notes on the error codes

The installation error 0x80240034 stands for WU_E_DOWNLOAD_FAILED, i.e. a fairly banal error message: The update simply failed to download. In 2017, I published the blog post Windows 10: Update error 0x80240034 about the update error. The blog post contains some tips on what you could try. For example, the installation error 0xd0000034 is described in this German comment – there is a problem with a manifest file.

Further reports on the error

Over the course of the night, more sites have been found – it appears to be a major error affecting many systems. There are also entries on reddit.com stating that the KB5035849 update fails during installation with the error code 0xd0000034.

German blog reader Stefan pointed in his comment here at the article Windows KB5035849 update failing to install with 0xd000034 errors from Bleeping Computer. Also Windows Latest has published now the article KB5035849 fails with 0xd0000034, but there's a fix for Windows 10 and Server users.

Simple solution: Direct download and install

The solution in most cases is probably to download the package directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it manually. This is confirmed in this comment.

According to Windows Latest, Microsoft is investigating the problem. I received feedback on Twitter that the update can be installed successfully since "this morning" (i.e. 13. March 2024 CET).
