Windows 11 23H2/22H2: Preview Update KB5035942 (March 26, 2024)

Windows[German]Microsoft has released the optional cumulative (preview) update KB5035942 for Windows 11 version 22H2 and 23H2 on March 26, 2024. The preview update brings a number of fixes for these Windows 11 versions. It is the long-awaited so-called Moments 5 update. An update with minor changes to Windows 11.

It should be noted that this update is a so-called preview update. It is optional and must be initiated manually for download and installation by default (although Windows 11 22H2 contains options for automatic installation). The update contains the fixes that will be rolled out in the security update for the following month. The list of updates for Windows 11 can be viewed on this Microsoft page.

Preview update KB5035942 for Windows 11 22H2-23H2

The preview update KB5035942 has been released for Windows 11 version 22H2-23H2 and provides new features and fixes for this Windows version. I took a look at the list of highlights that this update brings with it. I noticed a few things:

  • The Microsoft Copilot is still in a preview, whereby Microsoft writes that you can ask the Copilot in Windows (in the preview) ten times for help as long as you log in to Windows with a local account. After that, users must log in with a Microsoft account (MSA) or a Microsoft Entra ID account (formerly Azure Active Directory (Azure AD)). The bottom line is that Microsoft is unnecessarily restrictive, as activation could only have been carried out for users with the accounts specified here.
  • More content (widgets) such as sports, traffic and financial content is advertised, which can be displayed next to the weather display on the lock screen.

This update adds suggestions for snap layouts to help users combine multiple application windows. A layout box with different layout options is now displayed when hovering over the minimize or maximize button of an app. The list of highlights also mentions a few fixes and corrections as well as new support for Windows 365 Boot and Switch, features that Microsoft is promoting for certain (corporate) users in changing work environments who can then switch to Windows 365. For example, I reported on these approaches in the article Windows 365: Microsoft is working on a Windows 11 based cloud PC for consumers.

Further quality improvements and fixes are listed in the support article for update KB5035942. This long list of new features and fixes will be integrated into the security update for the following month. The preview update is optional and is offered if the user explicitly selects optional updates for installation on the settings page. If the option to install optional updates is activated, Windows 11 can also install the update automatically. The update is offered via Windows Update, but can also be downloaded and installed from the Microsoft Update Catalog. The latest Servicing Stack Update (SSU) is integrated to fix various problems.

Further details, e.g. on the installation requirements, can be found in the support article in case of doubt. Problems, if known, are also listed there (so far the section is empty).
