VMware users: Attention, portal migration to Broadcom on April 30, 2024

Stop - Pixabay[German]Brief information for administrators and users of VMware products. VMware by Broadcom has started to clean up its portfolio and change the licenses. For people who have not yet noticed this: At the end of April 2024, the old VMware portal, where the purchased licenses are managed, will be closed and moved to a new portal. In view of the upheaval, it is advisable to back up everything from the old portal that seems important.

The chaos at VMware

Since the final acquisition by Broadcom, VMware has turned out to be a mess for customers and partners, which kept people on their toes in the first months of 2024. In January 2024, there was a huge mess because people could no longer activate their licenses (see VMware OEM portal offline, customers cannot activate VMware licenses). The OEM portal in question was simply offline. I later provided more information in the blog post Order/license chaos for VMware products after Broadcom takeover (Jan. 2024).

In the meantime, Broadcom has taken action at VMware and forced a change in the product portfolio and licensing (see Broadcom ends perpetual licenses for VMware products – End of the free ESXi server?). Customers with old licenses who wish to continue using them until they expire are dependent on being able to manage these licenses in the VMware portal.

Portal migration to Broadcom

Blog reader Eicke has now pointed out to me that the migration of the VMware portal to Broadcom is due at the end of April 2024 (thanks for that). The reader wrote: "I think everyone is advised to save all the information that they may not yet have extracted from the current my.vmware portal. It will be interesting to see what is left after the porting."

VMware has published the support article VMware Support Transition to Broadcom (97304) as of April 9, 2024. It states that the process of transitioning to Broadcom systems and the necessary migration of VMware systems will begin on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m. PDT. The entire migration process is scheduled to end on Monday, May 6, 2024, at approximately 8:00 a.m. PDT.

Anyone who needs support between April 30 and May 6, 2024 can only receive it via the VMware customer service team at the specified number or in the event of a technical support case via VMware Customer Connect. Only a limited number of operations will be available to customers in the VMware Portal from April 30. According to the VMware article, the following functions will no longer be available:

  • User registration
  • License Management
  • Users/Approvals
  • EA management
  • Account management
  • Success plans
  • Subscription Delivery Platform (SDP)
  • My funds
  • Buy or upgrade products
  • Enroll in learning courses
  • Purchase support events

According to the support post, the following features will continue to be available:

  • Download product binaries and patches
  • Product reviews
  • Create, manage and close (support) cases
  • Reports

The vendor promises that "similar features and functionality will be available to VMware customers in the Broadcom Customer Support Portal beginning Monday, May 6, 2024, at approximately 8:00 a.m. PDT." In addition, the following account, entitlement, contact and support data will be transferred to the Broadcom Customer Support Portal

  • Active contracts
  • Product entitlements tied to active contracts
  • Contacts associated with product entitlements tied to active contracts
  • Product licenses
  • All open support cases (service requests)
  • Support cases (service requests) that have been closed in the last six months

The question remains as to what will be lost in this move or will no longer work in the new portal. Incidentally, this move should have no impact on VMware end-user computer (EUC) customers (with VMware Player/Workstation etc.), writes the provider.
