Teams 2.0: Deadline for switch extended by one year to July 1, 2025

Teams[German]Microsoft is now giving company administrators a whole year more time to switch from the classic Teams 1.x client to the new Teams 2.0 client. The original plans to force companies to switch to the new Microsoft Teams 2.0 client by April 1, 2024 are already a waste of time anyway. The previous three-month grace period until summer 2024 has simply been extended by a whole year.

New Teams 2.0 Client, a drama

Microsoft has been in the process of replacing the classic Teams 1.x client with a new Teams 2.0 client for many months. After a beta phase that started in spring 2023, the Teams 2.0 client for macOS and Windows was generally released in fall 2023. Since then, there have been an increasing number of reports from users about problems and inadequacies (see links at the end of the article).

Teams 2.0

On the other hand, we heard from Microsoft that the new Teams 2.0 client would become mandatory in 2024 – Redmond actually wanted to cut out old habits. At first it was said that the new Teams 2.0 client would become mandatory in companies on April 1, 2024. I reported on this in the blog post New Microsoft Teams 2.0 client mandatory from April 1, 2024. Then there was Microsoft's statement that clients older than 3 months will be on strike from April 2024 (see Microsoft Teams: Clients older than 3 months will no longer work from April 2024).

The mandatory switch to the new Teams 2.0 client has been postponed from April 2024 to July 2024 (see New Teams 2.0 client will be mandatory later – but some "chaos"). In my opinion, this is due to the many bugs in the new Teams 2.0 client and the refusal of companies to switch to the new client. At the beginning of January 2024, I wrote in the blog post Microsoft says, Teams 2.0 migration is to slow; 2/3 still on old client that a majority of Teams users have so far refused to switch to the new client.

There is a one-year grace period until 2025

Microsoft has now once again canceled the deadline for the mandatory switch to the new Teams 2.0 client. This is probably the result of a message from the Microsoft 365 Admincenter, which Martin Geuß has taken up here. It remains the case that people should officially switch to the new Teams 2.0 client on April 1 and July 1, 2024 at the latest. But there is no obligation to switch. I have extracted the relevant points below:

  • The Classic Teams 1.x client will drop out of support on July 1, 2024, as planned, and Microsoft will no longer provide technical support.
  • Users of the Classic Teams 1.x client will receive sporadic messages informing them that support is no longer available.
  • On Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and mac OS Sierra (10.12), the Classic Teams 1.x client will be available until October 23, 2024.
  • In Windows 10, 11 and newer macOS versions, the Classic Teams 1.x client will continue to be available until July 1, 2025..

In the meantime, I came across the Microsoft support article End of availability for classic Teams client from April 23, 2024, where Microsoft also explains the details again and publishes the following screenshot with the reference to the end of support, which will appear sporadically from March 31, 2024.

If the master plan is no longer changed by Microsoft, administrators in companies still have over a year to switch users to the new Teams 2.0 client.
