Windows 11: Word printing issues (no graphics, blank page when PDF reader is installed)

[German]I have received reports about printing issues in Word. One reader reports that blank pages are printed in Word when PDF readers are installed. Several readers writes that graphics in .doc files are no longer printed from Word.

Word prints blank page when PDF reader is installed

German blog reader Hauke S. contacted me by email on June 18, 2024 with the subject "Thanks and question about Office365 and printing" to thank us for the blog and report a crude problem. In his environment, he runs Windows 11 and the online version of Microsoft Office. He ran into printing problems with Word.

When trying to print something in the online version of Microsoft Word, for some time now he has only received a blank page in the print output. He has been able to narrow this down and writes that third-party software is to blame. Specifically, the page appears as soon as Adobe Reader or Foxit is set as the default PDF viewer.

Even stranger: If you open the document in Microsoft Word in "Read" mode, printing works. He writes that the bug only occurs in the online version and reported the problem to Microsoft a week ago. However, there seems to be a response from them (they seem to be "somewhat inflexible", the reader says). Hauke can reproduce the bug on almost all PCs that are available to him. The question to the blog readership: Is this an isolated case or can anyone confirm this?

Word wont' print graphics in .doc files

German blog reader Martin L. contacted me on Facebook on June 19 and also reported problems with Microsoft Word. He said "Something seems to be wrong with Word since today". He has the problem that a graphic from *.doc files can no longer be printed and asked: "Is there anything about this?". I didn't know anything about this yesterday, but I'm currently offline during the day, so I don't notice everything that comes up. However, Martin sent me a link today to the German Microsoft Answers forum post Fehlende Grafik beim Ausdrucken aus WORD (MS365, WIN10/11, alles tageaktuell). The thread starter describes the same error pattern there:

Various messages came in today, graphics and WordArt elements are missing on printouts from Word. Different systems, different locations, different printers. The only thing they have in common is that they are all *.doc files.

Error also occurs with "Microsoft Print to PDF" and is reproducible. After saving in *.docx, closing Word and opening the *docx file, it works better. But only better. After a few documents, various elements are sporadically missing on the printouts again.

Current WorkAround: Save as *.pdf and print the PDF.

n a reply to the post above, Aga1995 got in touch and described the problem of missing graphics from Microsoft Word 2016. The message reads:

Hi everyone, all of a sudden I have a problem with Word 2016 – everything was working fine until the day before yesterday.

Suddenly, inserted graphics and WordArts can no longer be printed. It only prints the text. The print preview shows everything as normal and complete.

A search on the Internet did not reveal any possible solution, the checkboxes in Settings > Display > Print options > "Print drawings created in Word" and "Print background colors and images" are already activated. The person concerned asks whether it could be due to an update?

It mentions that the Word document file is open in compatibility mode because it is an outdated .doc file in the format for "Word 97-2003". It looks like Microsoft has changed something over the days, the thread was created on June 19, 2024, the answer is from June 20, 2024. It is strange that no updates have been rolled out by Microsoft at this time (the updates were deployed a week ago).

Other German blog readers told me, that a workaround is: Go to the word graphic options and then in "Text wrap image" check to option 'Before the text' – that solved the problem with missing graphics in prites documents from doc files.

Anyone who can confirm this bug? Is there a final solution and can the root cause be specified?

Addendum: The issue has been fixed server side, according to this MS Answers forum post.
