Microsoft Teams: Teams 2.0 client distribution stopped; bug in iOS app causes issues with out-of-office notice

Teams[German]On July 1, 2024, the Teams 2.0 client was to be deployed across the board on Windows. Microsoft has stopped the automatic distribution because the automatic MS Teams 1.0 uninstallation leads to Outlook problems. And Microsoft has long had a bug in its iOS app for Teams that makes creating an out-of-office note a problem for users. The texts cannot be corrected via the app – it appears to be an array error. I'll summarize the two issues in a blog post.

MS Teams 2.0 client as a problem bear

The Teams 1.x client and the new Team 2.0 client are available for Microsoft Teams on the desktop. Microsoft also provides apps for iOS and Android. However, all MS Teams clients are repeatedly plagued by bugs – the Team 2.0 client for Windows in particular is frequently mentioned here on the blog.

Many administrators are struggling with problems when switching. I reported on some difficulties in the blog post Microsoft Teams 2.0 issues: Outlook add-in missing during installation; crash after installation and more. There is a workaround in the article Microsoft Teams 2.0: Fix for missing Outlook add-in.

It will now be exciting on July 1, 2024, as Microsoft originally planned to roll out the MS Teams 2.0 client across the board as early as April 2024.

Officially, the obligation to switch to this client in corporate environments has even been extended to July 2025 (see Teams 2.0: Deadline for switch extended by one year to July 1, 2025). But as of July 1, 2024, Microsoft will no longer support the old Teams 1.x client, and Redmond had started to roll out the new Teams 2.0 client and automatically uninstall the MS Teams 1.x client.

Annoying popup advertising new Teams client

This topic almost slipped through my fingers because I was on vacation. On June 19, 2024, a reader contacted me because he had come across it at a customer site. They use a remote Windows Server 2016 on which the classic Microsoft Teams is installed. "Unfortunately, Teams generates an annoying message for every user after starting," writes the reader.

The reader notes: "Since we don't want to update the entire OS to a newer version because of a "small" Teams update, I would like to ask you if you know of a solution to suppress this message or if it would be possible for you to write a post on this topic in your blog. Perhaps there are other users who are facing the same problem and a suitable solution could be found or shared through a blog post."

I don't know of any ad-hoc way to suppress the message. The message is related to the end of support described below. A few days ago, Microsoft published this post about the switch to the Teams 2.0 client.

MS Teams 2.0 client rollout stopped?

I was eagerly waiting to see what would happen on July 1, 2024, when the new Teams 2.0 client with numerous bugs would be working on the systems. Redmond's approach was to roll out the new Teams 2.0 client across the board and automatically uninstall the Teams 1.x client. But that must have backfired, because I read that Microsoft has suspended the rollout of the MS Teams 2.0 client with automatic uninstallation of the MS Teams 1.x client.

German blogger Martin Geuß mentioned it end of June 2024 in this article on Dr. Windows. Martin's article is based on a new message in the Microsoft 365 Admincenter. It states that the automatic uninstallation of the Teams 1.x client is causing problems. Martin writes that the Teams integration in Outlook no longer works. The Teams Meeting Add-In no longer works after removing the old Teams version. Accordingly, according to Microsoft, Teams meetings can no longer be scheduled and are no longer visible in the Outlook calendar.

The automatic uninstallation of the old Teams under Windows has therefore been suspended for the time being until the problem has been investigated and resolved. In the article https://borncity.com/win/2024/02/11/microsoft-teams-2-0-fix-for-missing-outlook-add-in/, I described a workaround. There are now instructions from Microsoft on how to reinstall the Teams add-in using a Powershell script.

iOS bug with out-of-office messages

Users of the iOS app for Microsoft Teams are also suffering from bugs. Reader Ralf M. emailed me about my blog post Neuer Teams-Client: Keine neuen Teams mehr erstellbar. There I had mentioned "Das neue Team in der iOS-App anlegen" as a workaround. Ralf noticed this and provided brief information about a bug that has still not been fixed by Microsoft (thanks for that). It is specifically about the iOS app of the Teams client.

  • If you create an out-of-office note with Outlook with automatic replies and enter a longer text there, is no problem, it works as desired.
  • If you now try to correct a longer text on the iPhone in the iOS app, the error appears: "Status message is longer than the limit."

iOS-Teams-App-Fehler "Statusmeldung ist länger als der Grenzwert"

This means that the text of the absence message cannot be amended. Few users seem to have noticed this so far. There is this Microsoft document, but I have not found any equivalent of the above error there.
