Windows 11 24H2: Update KB5041865 ships Recall

Windows[German]Another small addendum. Microsoft has released the optional update KB5041865 for Windows 11 24H2 on August 27, 2024. However, I have received reports that this update is not optional, but will be installed. This update includes the controversial recall function, which can be uninstalled.

Windows 11 24H2 Update KB5041865

Microsoft has published the preview update KB5041865 as "optional" for Windows 11 24H2, which has not yet been officially released. This update is offered via Windows Update, but is also available for download in the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Microsoft writes that Windows 11 version 24H2 is intended for Copilot+ PCs and devices that have previously used Windows Insider 24H2 builds. The following new features are listed in the support article for the update:

  • [Widgets Board] We are rolling out an update to the Widgets Board to improve security and APIs for creating widgets and feeds for users in EEA regions. As part of this update, the Microsoft Start Experiences app will support the Microsoft Start widget and feed features. This update also removes some existing widgets and modifies others, temporarily impacting their functionality. This update lays the foundation for new widgets and other features in development that will be introduced soon.

  • [Explorer]
    • When you press Windows logo key + E, a screen reader might say a pane has focus, or the focus might not be set at all.
      • When you press Ctrl + F, sometimes the search does not start.
      • Keyboard focus sometimes might get lost when you press Shift + Tab.
      • Screen readers do not announce when you open or browse items that are in a breadcrumb of the Open or Save dialog.
      • Screen readers do not announce when you open or browse items in the column header.
  • [Narrator] This update makes scan mode respond quicker. This is especially helpful when you use Microsoft Edge and read large documents. To use scan mode, you must turn on Narrator first (Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter). Then, turn on scan mode by pressing Caps lock + Spacebar during a Narrator session.
  • [Battery life] Some GPUs cannot enter the low power state. This leads to high power usage that reduces battery life.

What is not mentioned is that this update includes the highly controversial recall function on the systems (not only on Copilot+ PCs). The functions are to be rolled out to the systems in stages. The support article for the KB5041865 update also lists some improvements that will be made to Windows 10 24H2 as a result of the update.

Microsoft notes that there are no known problems with this update so far. The colleagues from deskmodder.de state here that the task manager on the tab with the performance display shows the background in white in dark mode and link to a workaround.

Update is installed without prompting

German blog reader Jup had contacted me on September 3, 2024 because he had noticed a special feature. He wrote about it:

if it is not yet known …

The above update is offered under Windows 11 24H2 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 as a normal (NOT preview) update.

Then the installation option "Recall" appears under "Windows features". This IS installed.

Jup then linked to this YouTube video, where the Recall option in "Windows Features" is mentioned from 1:10.

Jup hat dann noch auf dieses YouTube-Video verlinkt, wo ab 1:10 die Option Recall in "Windows-Features" angesprochen wird.
