Windows 11 24H2: Upgrade block for Voicemeeter app removed

Windows[German]Owners of Windows 11 systems using the Voicemeeter app have not yet been able to upgrade to version 24H2. Microsoft had discovered that this app is not compatible with this operating system and triggers a blue screen that causes the computer to crash. The manufacturer has now fixed the problem and the upgrade block has been removed.

Windows 11 24H2 and the Voicemeeter app

Windows 11 24H2 has been released to the public as a feature update on October 1, 2024 (see Windows 11 24H released (Oktober 1, 2024)). However, this release is currently annoying users with numerous bugs, some of which were already known at the time of release. The links at the end of the post refer to articles here in the blog that describe the individual bugs.

Among other things, the Voicemeeter app caused problems because this app was not compatible with Windows 11 24H2 The app may trigger an exception error with a blue screen when used, which caused the computer to crash. Microsoft then set an upgrade block for Windows 11 24H2.

Voicemeeter is an audio mixer application that comes with a virtual audio device that is used as a virtual I/O to mix and manage any audio source from or to any audio device or application. The app is free to use and is offered as donation goods.

Upgrade block for Voicemeeter app lifted

The developer of the Voicemeeter app has now responded and updated the problematic driver. On the Windows 11 24H2 Health Status page, you can find the support article Voicemeeter app might unexpectedly close causing a blue screen exception error, which has since been updated to November 8, 2024, in which Microsoft confirms that the problems with the Voicemeeter app have been resolved.

It states that devices experiencing the BlueScreens will need to install the latest version of the Voicemeeter app before upgrading to Windows 11, version 24H2.

The crash issues are resolved by installing the latest version (1.1.1.8 or 2.1.1.8 or 3.1.1.8) of the Voicemeeter application. This installs the updated driver version vbvoicemeetervaio64_win10.sys (3.3.1.9). The detailed steps for installing the application are listed in the Voicemeeter information / quick start guide.

If this does not help, users should contact the provider VB-Audio for further information on updating the driver.
