Windows: January 2025 updates cause audio issues

Windows[German]The January 2025 security updates can cause audio problems in several Windows versions (clients and servers). Microsoft has just documented this for Windows 11 24H2, Windows 10 22H2, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2016. The updates mainly affect USB 1.0 audio units in special environments.

Windows Updates January 2025

On January 14, 2025, Microsoft released various security updates for Windows 10/11 clients and Windows Server. I listed the relevant updates in the blog posts Patchday: Windows 10/11 Updates (January 14, 2025) and Patchday: Windows Server Updates (January 14, 2025).

Some of these security updates are known to cause problems on Windows 10 and Windows Server 2022 (see article links at the end of the article).

USB 1.0 audio problems after January 2025 update

Blog readers have pointed out that Microsoft has added another entry to its support articles for various Windows January 2025 updates in the Known Issues section. After installing the update, there may be problems with audio devices.

I had a look in the support article for the cumulative update KB5050009 for Windows 11 24H2. There is now an entry in the Known Issues that states that problems with USB audio devices may occur after installing this security update. This problem probably mainly relates to systems in which a USB 1.0 audio driver-based DAC (digital-to-analog converter) is used for audio output. According to Microsoft, this problem can cause USB audio devices to stop working and prevent audio playback.

According to Microsoft, DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters) are often used when users want to improve the quality of their audio systems (e.g. home audio systems, professional music studios and portable music players).

If a system is affected, the Device Manager may display the error:

"This device cannot start. (Code 10) Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API"

According to Microsoft, users can avoid this problem by avoiding the use of an external DAC and connecting the audio device directly to their PC. Microsoft is working on a solution and will release the bug fix in an update in the coming weeks.

The colleagues at Bleeping Computer has listed the following January 2025 updates as affected: Windows 24H2 (KB5050009), Windows 10 22H2 (KB5049981), Windows Server 2019 (KB5050008), and Windows Server 2016 (KB5049993).

Addendum: The audio issues seems to have fixed within the preview updates released end of January 2025 – see the linked articles about preview updates below.
