[German]Microsoft continues to struggle with update issues for Windows 11 24H2. Security updates from October and November 2024 can cause an issue, that affected machines can no longer install subsequent updates if they were set up using USB media or CD/DVD drives with the corresponding installation images. However, Microsoft has now solved the problem.
Updates for Oct./Nov. 2024 prevent subsequent updates
Administrators can use installation media (USB stick, DVD) for Windows 11 24H2 in which Windows updates that have been released since the Windows version was released are already integrated. This is actually a good thing, as these machines no longer have to download and install the relevant cumulative security updates from the update servers after installation. But there seems to be issues (I've written about such an issue within my blog post Windows 11 24H2; Server 2025: Problem "Operation is not supported" mit MSU-Update-Installation).
Microsoft had already pointed out a problem in December 2024 in the Known Issues of the Windows Release Health dashboard for Windows 11 24H2 (see my blog post Windows 11 24H2: No update installation in some cases). There is a warning Issues might occur with media which installs the October or November update from Microsoft, that stated that there could be problems when using installation media for Windows 11 version 24H2. The Windows 11 machine in question cannot install any further Windows security updates.
Microsoft states that this only occurs if the installation media (on DVD or USB stick) contains the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates for Windows 11 24H2 as part of the installation (these updates were released between October 8, 2024 and November 12, 2024).
The problem only occurs if installation media for Windows 11 24H2 in the form of DVDs and USB sticks are used for installation. If the security updates from October 2024 or November 2024 for Windows 11 24H2 are (downloaded and) installed via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog, this problem does not occur.
Microsoft's workarounds
Only Windows 11 version 24H2 is affected, as the support article explains. As of February 6, 2025, Microsoft has marked this issue as "resolved" and provides the following measures to prevent update installation issues.
To avoid this issue, Windows 11 version 24H2 must not be installed from media that contains the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates.
For Windows 11 24H2 systems that can no longer receive and install updates due to this issue, the situation can be remedied by reinstalling Windows 11 version 24H2 from media that already contains the December 2024 monthly security update (released on December 10, 2024) or later.
