iOS 18.4 released – first problems with push notifications

[German]Apple released its iOS 18.4 for the iPhone on March 31, 2025 and also released iPadOS 18.4 for iPads. However, I have already received a report from an administrator who had problems with push notifications. He was then able to fix the problem by intervening.

iOS 18.4 released

A German reader had already pointed out the release of iOS 18.4 in a comment (thank you). Apple has documented the patched vulnerabilities in the support article bout the security content of iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4. You can also read here that Apple is rolling out its "intelligence features" in other countries and for other languages. Our colleagues at deskmodder.de have published a few lines about this update and the new features here.

Problems with iOS 18.4 with push notifications

A blog reader contacted me overnight on Facebook in a private message (thank you) and wrote: "Just updated to iOS 18.4 and immediately discovered the first bug." The reader states that the push functionality no longer works after the update. Everything had worked until the update.

He wrote to me that he wanted to set up the account again straight away and then test it again. He added: "But it would still be annoying if every Exchange onPrem user had to set up their accounts again. It might affect others too."

The environment of the user, who works as an IT service provider and administrator: iOS 18.4 on a current iPhone Pro Max, Microsoft Exchange 2019 (onPremises), Sophos WAF for ActiveSync.

As reported, he had no problems with any devices before the update. After setting up the account again, he realized that it didn't help either. The push functionality also no longer works on another device from the family with iOS 18.4. All devices still running iOS 18.3.x, on the other hand, show no problems.

As the user concludes: "And I thought Apple would at least pay some attention to software quality, instead you get some beta AI garbage foisted on you."

There are workarounds

Blog reader Cedric commented and wrote in initial feedback on Facebook: "It seems to be working now. But I'm still keeping an eye on it". However, he added some time later that the whole thing was developing very "dynamically".

A comment at my German blog post mentioned, that on another of Cedric's devices, it helped to switch the push notifications off and on again. A restart was sufficient for another device. All in all, however, Apple has probably tinkered with the function via an update, so that the user at least has to take action themselves.
