Word/Excel 2016 crashing after April 2025 update KB5002700

[German]Die Sicherheitsupdates vom 8.

Office 2016 Update KB5002700

Update KB5002700 or Microsoft Office 2016 was released on April 8, 2025. It closes a remote code vulnerability. a privilege elevation vulnerability in Microsoft Office, a security feature bypass vulnerability in Microsoft Word, and a remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Excel. Here is the list of vulnerabilities that are addressed:

The installation of the security update should actually be necessary. But this update is causing problems. Shortly after its release, there were already initial reports of Outlook 2016 crashes. I addressed this problem in the blog post Outlook 2016: Calendar access blocked after April 2025 update KB5002700. Outlook 2016 crashes when accessing the calendar. As a workaround, you can deactivate the weather integration.

Word 2016/Excel 2016 crashes due to the update?

I have now received several reports from readers that Microsoft Word 2016 has also been affected by the April 2025 updates. The program crashes. Peter writes in this German comment that in his environment Microsoft Word 2016 is causing massive problems for users after the April 2025 patchday with crashes during all kinds of actions.

German blog reader CG reported, that he had problems with Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI installation) on two computers. Word 2015 crashed for him directly on startup. Jörg also writes in this German comment about problems that affect Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI version) with both Word 2016 and Excel 2016. When you start Word or Excel and click on a new sheet, Word/Excel crashes. Existing documents can be opened.

Jörg writes: "It looks like the Word/Excel problems only exist under Windows 11 (here 24H2) – under Windows 10 (22H2) there are no problems."

There is also a Patchday thread on reddit.com with reports, where Excel 2016 and Word 2016 crashes, are addressed. In all the reports I've come across on the blog, uninstalling KB5002700 fixes these issues.

Is an Adobe plugin to blame?

German blog reader ZRA65498 also posted a comment complaining about Word 2016 crashes. In this German comment, he writes that he was able to solve the problem. He found out that there is a connection with the Adobe add-in in his environment.

As a solution, he set the Loadbehavior mode for the PDFMaker.OfficeAddin addin to 0 via group policy. Since then, the problem has been solved in his environment.

Addendum: The issues has been fixed with another update, see Office 2016 update KB5002623 fixes crashes in Excel, Outlook, Word (April 10, 2025).

  1. MGmirkin says:

So, how do you uninstall the update on Win11? It doesn't seem to be uninstallable there, other than by rolling back to a restore point then running the show/hide updates tool. Is there a way to uninstall KB5002700 on Win11? Not a problem on Win10, which has a more robust uninstall ability…

    • fd says:

      You can.

wusa not work (say that KB not instaled), Remove-WindowsPackage not work KB is not in list, from GUI you see only few patches (currently there is about 100 office 2k16 and 0 in list)

But with ie iobit uninstaller … its work.

And yeah, pleasant uninstalling on hundreds of PC …

Also, can confirm that the problem exists under Windows 10. Ran into same issue on my own machine. Win10 22H2 (build 19045.5737).

We have Office 2016, and Adobe Acrobat Pro 2020 [with presumably the Adobe PDF Maker add-in, which has never caused an issue before this update broke things].

Word crashes on open. Outlook crashes on opening calendar. Excel may crash as well?

  3. Drive By says:

Disabling the loading of the PDFMaker Add-in is an effective workaround.

But it is a workaround, it does not solve the issue.

  4. Jörg says:

This Workaround doesn´t solve the closing of Excel when you klick on the "Insert" section in the menu

  5. Darkira says:

    Hello,

i have around 30 users in my company with the same problem, (all the others are under 2019/365).
going into the calendar of their Outlook crashes (On-prem Exchange ! i don't know if we care about this detail) and also opening Excel and going into the INSERT tab make Excel crashed immediately.
they are on Windows 10 (i don't have any users with W11 with 2016) and i'm starting to move them on 2019… i didn't know the workaround with the weather on Outlook, but as i still have Excel crashing i can't just do that for Outlook.

But thank you so much for those articles ! really helpful !

Update for Microsoft Office 2016 (KB5002623) this will fix the problem

  7. Karel says:

No, Word 2016 crashes with the Adobe add-in in the Czech version as well. Also, can confirm that the problem exists under Windows 10. It crashes in Windows 10 23H2 too.
Loadbehavior mode for the PDFMaker.OfficeAddin addin to 0 in the registry will solve it

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\PDFMaker.OfficeAddin]
    "LoadBehavior"=dword:00000000

  8. Michael says:

Problem also on US windows 10 with US office2016 msi, word crashes when selecting the "insert" tab. It appear that KB5002623 resolves the issue.
