Windows[German]A quick question to the blog readers as to whether the installation of the May 2025 update KB5058411 for Windows 11 24H2 went through. I have received a request from readers asking if I have any information about the KB5058411 error. It is a rather generic error that can have many causes. It can often only be solved by Inplace Upgrade.

Thread in Microsoft's German Answers forum

In Microsoft's German Answers forum there is the threadBeim Herunterladen von: 2025-05 Kumulatives Update für Windows 11 Version 24H2 für x64-basierte Systeme (KB5058411) kommt der Fehler: Installationsfehler – 0x800f081f . Report on German site deskmodder.de

A user has reported this comment on deskmodder.de. Based on the cbs.log, the cause could be broken down to the container installer. After uninstalling the sandbox as a feature, the update could be installed successfully. However, this could have been a special case.

Update error 0x800f081f

The error code 0x800f081f stands for CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING (see), a source or a package that is required in the update could not be found. This often indicates that the component store is damaged.

Try to repair Windows

Repair attempts using Dism and SFC with the following command sequence may help, but can also be without success:

sfc /scannow
Dism /online /cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup
Dism /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

The approach of resetting the update store, as described here for error code 0x800f081f, does not always seem to help those affected. An analysis of the generated CBS.log file could possibly provide clarification. However, this often does not help either.

Inplace upgrade as a fix

In many cases, if the cause cannot be determined from the CBS.log file or cannot be rectified, the only solution is an inplace upgrade. This involves reinstalling Windows from an installation medium from the running Windows via Setup.exe.

This approach allows data and installed programs to be retained, but ensures that all Windows files are rewritten to the system drive.
