Windows 10 Update KB5036979 bug: Right-click shows 'Open With' dialog

Windows[German]A short addendum to the preview update KB5036979 from April 23, 2024 (and subsequent updates). Unfortunately, a bug has "slipped" into this update, which is eating its way through the systems of Windows 10 users. As soon as one of the updates is installed, right-clicking on certain entries in the taskbar or Start menu runs amok. An Open with dialog is displayed instead of the context menu, as Microsoft has confirmed.

Windows 10 Preview Update KB5036979

Microsoft has released the preview update KB503697 for Windows 10 22H2 on April 23, 2024 (see my blog post Windows 10 22H2 Preview Update KB5036979 (April 23, 2024)). This update starts with important stuff like the rollout of account-related notifications for Microsoft accounts in Settings > Home. In other words, users will be annoyed with the request to finally set up a Microsoft account. There was also an addendum to Windows message center and other fixes. All fixes are included in May 2024 update KB5037768 and June update KB5039211.

Bug: Right-click opens "Open With" dialog

With the preview update KB503697 and the subsequent updates from May and June 2024, a bug has crept into Windows 10 22H2, which Microsoft confirmed in the Windows 10 Health status area on June 18, 2024. In the Known Issues entry Apps show "Open With" dialog when right-clicking on Taskbar or Start menu icons, Microsoft discloses the details.

If one of the Windows updates mentioned is installed, right-clicking on the icons of certain applications in the Start menu and in the taskbar does not open a context menu. Instead, the "Open with" dialog box appears, asking how the user would like to open this file. Microsoft notes that this problem can occur when users right-click an application icon in the taskbar or Start menu to perform a task in that application using a context menu command.

In other words, the context menu is not available for the applications in question. According to Microsoft, this problem has been reported by users of Teams, the new Outlook for Windows and Snip & Sketch. According to Microsoft, this problem can also affect other applications. Microsoft does not see this as a tragedy, although the "Open with" dialog box prevents the use of the tasks available in the context menu. But the user can (probably) perform the same operations in the application in question.

Windows 10 versions 21H2 and 22H2 are affected if one of the updates has been installed since April 23, 2024 or later and the context menu is required for one of these applications. Microsoft is currently working on a solution and plans to provide it in one of the next versions via an update. Bleeping Computer has a few additional details.

Question: Is anyone affected by this bug? I do not use any of the applications mentioned above and could not detect the behavior in other programs.
