[German]The Browser Choice Alliance accuses Microsoft of actively restricting users' choice of browser. Microsoft is said to be hindering consumers' ability to use alternative web browsers by forcing users to use Edge despite other options.
I have discussed the issue of Edge nag screens when users want to download alternative browsers in Edge several times on the blog. This has now come to the attention of the Browser Choice Alliance and the organization is accusing Microsoft of obstructing users in their choice of browser.
The above post on BlueSky leads to a post from late November 2024. The Browser Choice Alliance currently includes Opera, Vivaldi, Google, Wavebox and Waterfox. The Browser Choice Alliance (BCA) accuses Microsoft of actively restricting users' choices to use alternative web browsers in Windows and hindering consumers' ability to choose browsers. Users are actively being steered towards the Edge browser by Microsoft despite the many alternatives available today.
The group has filed a formal petition with the European Commission to designate Microsoft Edge as a "gatekeeper" service under the Digital Markets Act, which would force Microsoft to offer more browser options for Windows users.
